Two members of ‘This is Rigged’ have blockaded Powdrake road, the entry route to Grangemouth oil terminal, in the latest demonstration at the Ineos site.

Two other members are also reported to have occupied the oil terminal while six have been arrested after chaining themselves to security fencing.

This is Rigged are demanding that the Scottish government vocally oppose all new oil and gas licences, and create a fair and fully funded transition for oil workers.

35-year-old Tez, a bicycle mechanic from Swansea, who took action this morning said: “There needs to be a just transition away from fossil fuels here in the UK. Oil from the North Sea is sold on the global market for private profits and will not ease the cost of living crisis. I'm taking action today because directly blocking the flow of oil out of this terminal by shutting it down, puts material pressure on the Scottish government – via the oil industry – to stand up for its citizens and say no to new fossil fuel licences.”

21-year-old Phoebe, a community worker from London, who also took action said: “Scotland is the second largest producer of oil in Europe and yet Scots don't see any benefit, with 30-40% of the population in fuel poverty. The climate crisis and cost of living crisis would both be helped by a move to renewables, which are 9 times cheaper than fossil fuels. Scotland has a huge potential for wind and tidal power, so with a just transition for oil workers, Scotland could lead the way in taking the essential and life-saving step of stopping new oil and gas.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We are aware of protestors at the Ineos site in Grangemouth.

"A number of arrests have been made and officers remain in attendance."
