The road is currently closed between Cardrona and Peebles. And motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.10pm on Monday (September 5th) police and emergency services attended a road crash involving a pedestrian and a bus on the A72 at Eshiels, near Peebles.
“The pedestrian, a teenage girl, has been taken by ambulance to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where medical staff describe her condition as critical.
“The A72 remains closed between Cardrona and Peebles to allow officers to carry out their enquiries. Motorists are advised to use the alternative routes signposted at this time."
It's understood the girl had been leaving a school bus travelling from Peebles High to Galashiels when she stepped onto the road and was hit by another vehicle.
A spokesperson for Borders Buses told us: "A passenger who departed one of our buses was involved in a road traffic collision on the A72; our vehicle was not involved.
"Our bus was travelling from Peebles High to Galashiels.
"This is police matter, and we are unable to comment further."
