A Perth woman is opening up about the pain of losing a loved one to suicide as part of World Suicide Prevention Day.

Susan Scott lost her husband Duncan three decades ago when he was 26-years-old.

She now works at mental health charity Plus in a bid to tackle suicide rates - which have risen to a 16 year high in the UK.

Susan says the pain of losing someone to suicide is like no other.

"It affects a whole host of friends, relatives and it lasts a long time. It's not like a normal bereavement, it does last a lot longer because there's a lot of confused feelings," she said.

"It makes you question if it could have been avoided because it was so sudden.

"At the time it doesn't feel real. People often say that, that they feel like they're watching someone else's life play out.

"You just do what you can to get through and it takes a number of years to stop blaming yourself."
