The Friarton Bridge in Perth is closed as emergency services tackle a blaze at a recycling centre.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene underneath the M90 on Lower Friarton Road around 3am this morning.

They have confirmed that no one is injured. However, we have been asked to avoid the area and for locals to keep their windows and doors shut because of thick smoke.

Police are on the scene and are stopping motorists from crossing the bridge. which is expected to be closed for some time.

In the meantime traffic is being diverted through Perth city centre.

Many drivers have been trying to beat the traffic by driving through the Kinnoull Hill area, leading to it becoming very congested too.

First Minister and MSP for Perthshire North John Swinney said he is 'deeply concerned' that there has been another fire at the Shore Recycling Centre, which was the site of a fatal blast in February 2023.

He said:

"The chaos and inconvenience that has been caused as a consequence of this to local residents is completely intolerable.

"There needs to be very stringent controls on the site operations to make sure that every step is being taken to ensure the safety of staff, members of the public and to avoid inconvenience of the type members of the public have experienced this morning."

The site has now been taken over by the company Enva, who we've approached for comment.
