The Kitmart Dundee Stars have signed Brett Stovin for the approaching Elite League season.

The 24-year old is capable of playing multiple positions including, center, right-wing or defence and joins from the University of Manitoba.

The Canadian began his junior career with Manitoba Midget side, Interlake Lightning in 2009 and in the same year, he was drafted by the Saskatoon Blades in round five at 90th overall in the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Stovin joined the Blades for the 2010-11 season before returning to Interlake and then moving to the Winnipeg Blues.

During his time with the Blades, Stovin was teammates with Connor Cox between 2010 and 2013.

Brett also iced for Canada in 2011 as part of the Canada Western team that competed in the World Hockey Challenge and he scored one goal and assisted on one other in five matches.

The six-foot-one-inch skater spent 2011 to 2015 with the Saskatoon club and was named alternate captain in 2013-14 and then captain in 2014-15.

In 263 WHL appearances, the Stony Mountain, Manitoba native totalled 126 points.

Stovin finished off 2015 with the Missouri Mavericks, where he played alongside ex-Star, Gabriel Lévesque.

The 2015-16 season seen the right-handed shot player join the University of Manitoba Bisons in the USports league and Brett was named in the CIS (West) All-Rookie Team in his freshman year.

His second season with the Bisons seen him appointed as alternate captain before again being promoted to captain for the 2017-18 campaign and he again captained his side last season.

In four years with Manitoba, Stovin iced in 101 games, scoring 27 goals and creating 52 more for 79 points.

Once Stovin had put pen to paper for the upcoming season, general manager and head coach, Omar Pacha said: “One of the main reasons why I wanted Brett was because he can play both sides, he can play centre and he can play defence.

“He is a really versatile player and you can just see his character.

“He was the captain for the last few years in Manitoba, he was captain of his junior team, so he has a great leadership skills and he is a hard-working player.

“I think he is going to be more suited to the professional game than the college game and after struggling with an injury for the last few years, his speed is back. I think that is one of his best assets.

“I think we are getting a player that will surprise a lot of people and he will be committed on and off the ice.

“I can’t speak highly enough of his character, all the references we got for him were great and after watching video on him, I am excited to have him join the Stars.”

After signing for his first team in Europe, Brett said: “I am really excited to come and put a Stars jersey on and get to know some people in the community and work hard for them.

“After speaking with a few teams overseas, it just seemed right to come to Dundee and speaking with Omar (Pacha) and Drydn Dow, they both seemed to talk about how close-knit the community is there.

“I’m there to do what it takes and the fans will see it because that’s what I am about.”

John Gaudes, sports information and digital media coordinator for the University of Manitoba added: “Brett’s a fantastic person and tremendous leader in the locker room.

“He is a high IQ player too, he can score and assist and I am excited to see how his pro career turns out.”
