A St Andrews University Professor has begun her new position as member of the European Parliament, which could see her avoid extradition to Spain.

Clara Ponsati faces a charge of sedition over her role in Catalonia's unsanctioned independence referendum in 2017.

This week she arrived in Strasbourg to begin her role as a Catalan MEP.

"Honestly I wasn't expecting to become an MEP. I knew from the election results that if Brexit went through I would become an MEP," she said.

"At that time my expectation was that either Brexit might not happen or would take a long time.

"Things have happened faster than I thought."

St Andrews University confirmed Clara Ponsati remains an employee and added no decision on her long term position has been made.
