SNP MP John Nicholson has been accused of making an "ignorant racial slur" after he said that politicians who apply their own make up look "overly brown" and "tandoori themselves".

The Ochil and South Perthshire representative made the comments in a now deleted Twitter post ahead of a TV appearance last night.

Scottish Conservative MSP Pam Gosal has called on Mr Nicholson to apologise for the 'offensive stereotype' that she said she 'hoped we'd left behind in the 1970s'.

Ms Gosal added:

“To use the term ‘tandoori’ in relation to brown skin colour is grossly offensive. The subtext is clear: brown people eat curry.

“It’s an offensive stereotype that I’d hoped we’d left behind in the 1970s, yet here we have a supposedly ‘progressive’ politician using it in 2023.

“John Nicolson needs to apologise for his lazy and crude pigeonholing and remove this crass tweet.”

We have approached Mr Nicholson for comment.
