Silver medals for Scots in cycling and sailing at the Tokyo Olympics

Team GB take second in as records tumble in the velodrome

Scottish cyclists Katie Archibald and Neah Evans won had to settle for silver in the women's team pursuit the Tokyo Olympics as Germany won gold in a new world record time.

The British team including Archibald, Evans and Laura Kenny broke the world record to claim their place in the final only to see the Germans break it again, then put it further out of reach, winning the final by more than six seconds in a time of four minutes 04.249 seconds.

Evans, from Turiff in Aberdeenshire commented: "It's really special. Obviously we were defending champions and there are huge expectations because we do have such a good reputation, but there are so many strong nations.

"We came out fighting but it wasn't to be this time.''

Silver for sprint team

Paisley's Jack Carlin collected silver as the men's team sprint trio were denied gold by all-conquering Holland, who set a new Olympic record of 41.369 seconds.

The British riders struggling to hold one another's wheels they finished three seconds down on the Dutch, who have not been beaten in a team sprint event since 2017.

Sailing medal rush

It was a better day on the water for the sailors who capped off a great morning with a silver for Olympic debutants for Anna Burnet, from Helensburgh, and John Gimson in the mixed Nacra 17 class.

They were guaranteed a medal going into the final race and finished safely in fifth to stay in second place behind Italians Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti.

Team GB won two gold medals in sailing in the space of an hour as Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell claimed the narrowest of victories in the 49er before Giles Scott successfully defended his Finn title.
