St Andrews named Scotland's top costal destination
The Fife town also ranked 3rd in the UK in the Which? survey
St Andrews has been ranked as Scotland's top costal destination and the third best in the UK.
The Which? survey saw more than 4,300 people rate costal resorts they had visited based on categories like quality of beaches, seafront, tourist attractions, food and drink, scenery, peace and quiet and value for money.
Respondents commented on the Fife town saying it “oozes golf” while praising the university city’s “youthful vibe”, quaint streets and historical sites, testament to its winning blend of sport, culture, sand and sea.
Bamburgh, a village in Northumberland with a population of just over 400, ranked top of the chart for the UK.
Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, said: “The British seaside hasn’t boomed like this since the 1960s. Holidaymakers had such a fantastic time in their caravans, tents and beach lodges over the past two years that a coastal break on home shores is on the cards for many, even with restrictions on overseas travel lifted.
“Prices for a UK stay have increased, but there’s no need to pay over the odds. For a holiday on a budget it’s best to aim for an off-season trip. Head to one of the many well priced resorts with your bucket and spade, an empty stomach for the candyfloss and a pile of 2p coins and go make your fortune on the slots.”
North East Fife Liberal Democrat MP Wendy Chamberlain said: “St Andrews is a unique and beautiful place and I am glad that it has been recognised in Which?’s survey. The result is a testament not only to the quality of the town’s beaches, golf courses, or other attractions, but its many vibrant businesses which.
North East Fife Liberal Democrat MSP Willie Rennie added: “Tourism is a vitally important sector not just in St Andrews but for the whole of North East Fife. The pandemic hit these businesses particularly hard, so this result shows the hard work which has been done and which continues to recover from the impact of covid.”
