Scotland's volunteer lifeboat crews launched more than 1,000 times last year, saving 29 lives.

The RNLI said Broughty Ferry was the busiest lifeboat station in 2015, a year which saw its crews work exceptionally hard'' serving storm and flood-hit communities.

In December the Girvan lifeboat team helped passengers escape after a bus got caught in flood water, and in the first week of January an Aberdeen crew used rocket-propelled lines to help SSE restore power after storms.

Last year also saw the RNLI begin a lifeguard service on four beaches in Fife.

Matt Crofts from the charity said: We would like to thank all of our volunteers for their tireless hard work and dedication over the last 12 months.

Without all of our volunteers, fundraisers and education teams our lifesaving service would not operate.''

RNLI lifeboats launched 1,078 times in Scotland last year - up from 1,002 in 2014 - with around a fifth of callouts relating to pleasure craft.

Boats with machinery failure accounted for a similar proportion of launches and almost 40 callouts were to people cut off by the tide.
