Eljamel campaigner set to meet Scotland's Lord Advocate
It comes after Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC criticised the pace of Police Scotland's seven-year investigation into the scandal
Patients of disgraced former NHS Tayside surgeon Professor Sam Eljamel are set to meet Scotland's top law officer this afternoon.
It comes after Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC criticised the pace of Police Scotland's seven-year investigation into the scandal in a letter to campaigner Jules Rose at the end of last year.
In the letter, she said the probe "has not progressed as it should have".
The former Head of Neurosurgery at Ninewells Hospital harmed dozens of patients while he worked in Dundee between 1995 and 2013, when he was suspended.
He is now believed to be practising in Libya.
Police launched an investigation into Eljamel in 2018, but patients have often complained about the rate at which progress has been made.
Their campaign has gained cross-party support from MSPs with the Scottish Conservatives Liz Smith, Scottish Labour's Michael Marra and the Scottish Lib Dems' Willie Rennie particularly vocal on the issue.
Both Liz Smith and Willie Rennie have told us the next step should be for patients to meet with Police Scotland's Chief Constable.
We've contacted the force for comment.
