Police warn Tayside shops to be on the lookout after fake banknotes used
The notes are described as being high quality fakes, but are missing some key security features.
Business across Tayside are being warned to be on the lookout for fake bank notes.
The counterfeit Bank of England £50 notes have been used recently in shops in the region.
Local Police are warning the money feels genuine and are high quality fakes – although they’re missing key security features.
Two of the notes were used by three men who spoke with Irish accents - they bought less than £10 worth of goods when they used the fake notes.
While they were in the shop the trio spoke quickly, which officers believe may have been in an attempt to distract staff.
They were also driving a white van.
The notes in question have the serial numbers UH96 308124 and DG44 012699.
Tayside Police said: “If you work in a shop or store and are ever passed a bank note you are unsure of, you are perfectly entitled to refuse to accept it.
“If a person tendering a note you are unhappy with becomes abusive or aggressive, call us immediately."
