A Perth man who was caught shoplifting for his cat has been ordered to stay out of trouble for four months.

Garry Gannon told a court his life was chaotic due to drug misuse and he was reduced to stealing pet food for his starving cat.

The 42-year-old admitted stealing a packet of animal food from the city's B & M Store on 29 January this year.

He said: "At the time of this I was trying to get on a methadone programme and my life was a bit chaotic.

"I was just spending money on other things and it was a silly mistake. My cat was hungry. I have got things under control now."

Gannon had sentence deferred for four months and was ordered to be of good behaviour
