Perth Christmas Lights Switch-On cancelled
There are a number of warnings in place ahead of Storm Bert
Perth's Christmas lights switch weekend of activities has been cancelled due to concerns for public safety ahead of Storm Bert.
The local authority is highlighting the yellow warning for strong winds which it says could affect large structures like the stage and put attendees’ safety at risk.
There are also fears the wider amber and yellow warnings could occupy the time of emergency crews which would have otherwise been there.
The events were due to take place this weekend with German dance stars Cascada to headline.
This marks the first time Perth’s Christmas Light Switch-On has been cancelled, barring Covid.
Some parts of the celebration can still be enjoyed
However, the council has said some aspects of the celebration will be going ahead.
Families can still visit the Christmas cabins and Santa’s Grotto will remain in place as advertised.
But the local authority says due to timescales and the costs involved, the main event will not be rescheduled.
Council says safety comes first
In a statement, Perth and Kinross Council said: “Unfortunately, after closely monitoring the weather forecasts and consulting with our suppliers, we've decided to cancel the Christmas Lights Switch-On Weekend activities on Saturday and Sunday due to safety concerns and potential difficulties with travel from out-with Perth.
“In particular, the yellow warning for strong winds which could pose a public safety risk with large structures like the stages.
“We are also aware that with the wider amber and yellow weather warnings there are people who would otherwise be involved in supporting these events may be needed to provide responses to the impact of weather elsewhere in Perth and Kinross.
“Perth’s Christmas Lights Switch-On event has been a staple of the city centre event calendar for many years and, barring Covid, this is the first time we have ever had to cancel it.
“Unfortunately, due to the timescales and costs involved, we will not be able to reschedule the event to an alternative date.
“However, the Christmas cabins and Santa Grotto will remain in place as advertised.
“We regret and share the disappointment of everyone who was looking forward to the event.
“We’re sure you agree that safety must come first.
“Thank you for your understanding.”
