Parents are being promised they'll get their say on any merger of Dundee's Braeview Academy and Craigie High schools.

Plans to develop a £60 million unit in the east of the city will be discussed next week.

It's after Braeview was hit by a major blaze in September 2018.

Children's and families convener Stewart Hunter has assured parents they will be consulted.

"All we're asking to do next Monday is go out and formally consult with parents, pupils, staff and the local community.

"To do that we have to form a paper which outlines exactly what we're thinking."

The grounds of the former St Saviour's High on Drumgeith Road has been identified as the preferred site for the new school.

Mr Hunter is confident merging the two won't be detrimental to pupils' learning.

"I think they'd actually have better chances. That's one of the things we've discovered, the smaller the school, the less opportunities we can give to young people," he said.

"A bigger school would give more opportunities."

According to a report to go before the Children and Families Services committee, the new school would provide revenue savings of around £78,000 in 2024/25, rising to £400,000 in 2025/26 and £735,000 the following year.

It would take on around 1800 pupils.
