Work to re-start "immediately" at new Madras College
Last updated 11th Jun 2020
Work on the new Madras College in St Andrews will re-start immediately - after the Scottish Government gave the construction industry the green light to return.
Fife Council's confirmed that it's still hoping the building will be ready for the start of the 2021/2022 academic year.
Councillor Fay Sinclair, Convener of Education and Children’s Services Committee said: "I’m pleased to see construction work re-starting on the new Madras College as understandably locals were worried the planned opening date would not be met.
"We’re conscious that any delays to the completion date would impact significantly on the whole school community.
"By re-starting these works now, we can do everything possible to mitigate these delays and achieve an August 2021 opening date."
It's after the First Minister revealed some work on "non-essential" construction sites can now take place - so long as social distancing is in place.
The move is part of third phase of sector's six-part Covid-19 restart plan.
Scottish Building Federation managing director Vaughan Hart said: "We are delighted the First Minister has approved plans to allow the construction sector to begin a soft start on site from next week.
"Both individual members and the industry as whole have been working tirelessly with unions, clients and professional bodies to ensure we only reopen sites when we can make it safe to do so.
"I believe that work has paid off and a number of sites will now be ready to begin work again on Monday."
