The 2 Sisters chicken factory in Coupar Angus could be in line for a multi-million pound investment, after plans were submitted to Perth and Kinross Council.
Amber Real Estate Investment (Amber REI) has formally announced exciting proposals for a major £65 million investment in a poultry processing facility in Coupar Angus.
The plant has been recently hit by three major coronavirus outbreaks -- but NHS Tayside says there are no plans for an incident management team to meet again.
The development forms part of a potential major Scottish investment programme by the company to deliver post-Covid investment amounting to more than £150 million into the agriculture, food production and tourism sectors. This will support 5,750 jobs and deliver low carbon facilities.
The proposals include the extension and modernisation of the existing factory at Coupar Angus, the primary poultry processing plant in Scotland, in the short to medium-term. Coupled with this is the proposed longer-term future relocation of the plant to create a brand-new state-of-the art facility on neighbouring land which the company currently owns.
The current plant site will then be removed for a potential mix of commercial, industrial and commercial uses, along with associated infrastructure including car parking and landscaping.
Such investment will generate significant benefits to the local and wider economies, sustaining jobs and supporting the supply chain, as well as improving standards in the sector.
Dr Emma Fletcher, chair of the multiagency Incident Management Team (IMT) said, “The number of cases of COVID-19 associated with the 2 Sisters factory has now risen to 49.
“This is an expected increase made up of people who had previously been identified as close contacts and advised to self-isolate.
“The factory is working closely with NHS Tayside’s Public Health team and Food Standards Scotland to ensure all arrangements for contact tracing and self-isolation are in place. Staff who are self-isolating are being given appropriate advice and additional support from their relevant Local Authority if needed.
“The IMT is reassured that the factory can remain open at this time. There are currently no plans for the IMT to meet again but Public Health will keep the situation under close review and reconvene if necessary.”
