The Royal British Legion in Montrose suffered damages and had a four figure sum of cash stolen following a break-in over the weekend.

Some of the items damaged include, doors, a window, games machines and CCTV.

Val Cooper, treasurer of the facility, was called down to the building when a barmaid discovered the scene on Saturday morning. She said: "To come in on Saturday, behind the Police, and see the damage, and the fact that this is for ex-servicemen, this is a British Legion, to see the mess, it was devastating. The barmaid was in tears."

On the damages she said: "They disarmed the alarm, they had to damage some doors to get there. Two gaming machines, bandits, they are completely smashed and one of them was due to be emptied.

"The biggest expenses are going to be the external doors, the window and replacing the control box of the CCTV."

On the amount of money stolen, she said: "Between the bandits and the float they will have taken between three thousand and three and a half thousand pounds."

She added: "Oh we will not let this beat us. There is no way that this will beat us. We have a hall upstairs and with Police permission and assistance we manged to open that."

In a statement Police Scotland say they are appealing for information following the break-in and that entry was gained to the premises between 11.45pm on Friday, 19th August and 10.40am on Saturday, 20th August, 2022.
