A Perth missing pets group have raised over eleven thousand pounds as they look to support pets and their owners in Ukraine.

The idea to donate to those suffering originally came on the evening of Sunday 27th February when a post was published on Missing Pets, Perth and Kinross Scotland Facebook page. The post suggested taking £100 from the groups donation fund to buy cat and dog food to be sent to Poland.

Katie McCandless Thomas from the group said it "snowballed" from there as they set up a Just Giving page which has now raised over £11,100.

The donations will compliment the countless others that have come from Perthshire as the Perth Polish Saturday School have already sent their first load over to Poland.

On what the money will be used for, Katie said: "People from Poland and other places are traveling to the border and meeting people with the animal food there. So, we're looking at directly donating money to the rescues so they know what supplies are directly needed.

"We're also looking at spending some money directly on food ourselves."

On the impact she hopes the donations can have, she added: "Some people only have pets as family, so, they're not going to leave them behind. There's so many families that are doing everything they can to travel with their pets and when they're fleeing they don't have the normal supplies that they would be able to take with them, they're just having to pack up what they can.

"They're not only worrying about themselves, they've got that additional pressure of how they're going to feed their dog, their cat or other animals, how they might need medication, all of these things. So, we just hope that when they get this money or these supplies that it can just take that little bit of pressure and worry off their shoulders at such a really, really horrendous time."

Katie says she has been blown away by the support of the Perthshire community and beyond as she added: "It has like just snowballed in an amazing way that now we've been able to raise over ten thousand pound. It feels a wee bit surreal to be honest. It's very, very moving to see how many people have come together to help."
