McPake confirmed as Dundee skipper

McPake named Dundee captain

Dundee have confirmed James McPake will captain the club next season - even though the defender is unlikely to be fit for the start of action next month.

The Dens Park club have been without a full-time skipper since Kevin Thomson quit Tayside to move back to Hibernian in January.

Former Livingston, Coventry and Hibs centre-back McPake had worn the armband on occasion before a serious knee injury suffered in the New Year derby clash with Dundee United ended his season.

The 31-year-old still has some way to go before he will be ready to resume playing duties and boss Paul Hartley will again have to share out the captaincy role once the Dee kick-off the new campaign with their Betfred Cup clash against East Fife on July 16.

Darren O'Dea and Gary Harkins also led the team out last term in McPake's absence and are likely to be asked to take it on again.

Confirming McPake's appoint, a Dundee spokesman said: Dundee Football Club can confirm that James McPake has been appointed club captain ahead of the 2016-17 Ladbrokes Premiership campaign.

The new season will be James' third as a Dundee player after joining in the summer of 2014 shortly after the club's return to the top flight.

Over the past two seasons, he has captained the team on a number of occasions and has been a leader in the dressing room.''
