A 25-year-old woman has been taken to hospital after a stairwell collapsed in Perth.

The incident at a building in Atholl Street in the city centre on Wednesday morning prompted a major operation by police, ambulance and fire crews.

The woman was taken to Perth Royal Infirmary for treatment to minor injuries.

Roads have been closed at Atholl Street between Rose Terrace and North Methven Street, while a cordon has been set up around the affected area.

Neighbours gave their reaction to the news.

Elizabeth Lyttle, who lives around the corner from Atholl Street said: "Basically, I'm really not surprised.

"These buildings are 200 years old and there has been a lot of flooding underneath.

"That water has got to have caused damage so it's not something that shocks me."

Graham Reid, who owns one of the buildings next door to where the incident happened, said it was sobering news to wake up to.

He said: "When you get a phone call telling you part of the building next door has collapsed it's quite a shock but the street is very old so I feel quite lucky, really."

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: We are dealing with a collapsed structure in Perth city centre.''

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received a call at 7.24am to attend an incident at an address on Atholl Street, Perth.

"We dispatched one ambulance, our special operations response team, two managers and a trauma team.

"One female patient was taken to Perth Royal Infirmary.''

A police spokesman said: "Police Scotland attended at a block of flats in Atholl Street, Perth, at about 7.20am on March 29 following a report that a floor area within the common close, on the ground floor, had collapsed into the basement.

"Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Scottish Ambulance Service also attended.

"A 25-year-old woman was assisted from the basement area and was taken to Perth Royal Infirmary where she is understood to be receiving treatment to minor injuries.

"Residents from the block of flats have been evacuated to allow a structural assessment of the building to be carried out.''
