Glenn Craib appeared in private at Forfar Sheriff Court over the death of Witold Solski, 65, in a smash on November 25 last year.
Mr Solski, of Dundee, died at the roadside following the crash, on the A90 dual carriageway near Stracathro, Angus.
Craib, 45, of Elgin, appeared on petition at Forfar Sheriff Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
The HGV driver made no plea or declaration and had his case was continued for further examination.
He was released on bail meantime and a date for his next appearance has yet to be confirmed.
Mr Solski was cut free from the wreckage of his Skoda by firefighters but was pronounced dead at the roadside.
He was driving between Forfar and Brechin when the collision took place on the northbound carriageway near to the Careston/Balnabreich junction.
A 30-year-old female passenger in the car was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but was not seriously injured.
The accident took place at around 6.20pm and saw five fire appliances called to the scene.
The road was closed to northbound traffic until 1am to allow investigations to take place.
Mr Solski, a self-employed tradesman, was described as a "family man" and a "great guy" after his death.
Friend Thomasz Zalewski said: "I was shocked to hear the news about Witold.
"He was a great guy, really friendly to everyone he met."
