One American professor is in Tayside this week to try to explain the phenomenon.
Political science professor Dr McClellan from Northern Virginia Community College is being hosted by Dundee and Angus College all week to lecture on the upcoming election.
Dr McClellan is speaking at the college as well as Dundee and Abertay Universities looking at how the controversial businessman gained so much support.
He's been talking to our reporter Lizzie Parker about the "dangerous" billionaire and his chances of becoming president.
