Two cars and a nearby fence were engulfed in flames this morning, following what is believed to have been an act of willful fire-raising.

It is thought that a wheelie bin was set alight which spread to the fence, a silver Honda Civic and a black BMW 3 Series at around 4:30am.

Firefighters arrived on the scene in Shiel Road in Glenrothes and managed to stop the blaze from spreading even further, but both vehicles suffered extensive damage.

An investigation has been launched to find the person responsible.

Detective Constable Stephanie Drummond of Glenrothes CID said: "This was a hugely reckless act and, thankfully, the fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service before it could spread any further.

"As part of our investigation, we'd urge anyone who may have seen suspicious behaviour in the area around this time, or who has any information which might be relevant, to contact us as soon as possible."
