Free Wi-Fi now at Dundee's Waterfront
Internet access has officially gone live for residents and visitors.
Residents and visitors to Dundee now have access to a free public Wi-Fi network offering fast internet access in the central Waterfront area.
Users of the free service, backed by a full fibre broadband network installed throughout the Waterfront, can expect speedy connections for smartphones and other devices, with no limits on time of use.
The network can be found under the name DundeeFreeWiFi.
The public Wi-Fi network is just one of the services being supported by a £2m investment in future-proof digital infrastructure, which will also include a cutting-edge 5G testbed geared for innovative uses going forward, and an interactive digital play park.
The Waterfront work is being delivered by Dundee City Council in conjunction with a range of partners, including AWTG, Abertay University, the Scottish Futures Trust and the Scotland 5G Centre.
Dundee City Council’s convener of City Development, Councillor Mark Flynn, said: “This is another important milestone in the transformation of the central Waterfront area.
“The high-speed public Wi-Fi network has a whole host of uses, now and in the future, and I’m sure it will be welcomed by people who live and work in the area as well as the many visitors we host each year.
“This development is just part of our wider ambitions as a leading Digital City, including working with partners on next-generation fibre broadband accessible throughout the city.”
Professor Gregor White, Dean of Abertay University’s School of Design and Informatics, said: “It’s great to see the public 5G Wi-Fi network going live in Dundee as we continue to progress work that will test the capabilities of the technology and its capacity to benefit the way we keep in touch, socialise and do business.
“The rollout of 5G is great for many of the tech companies in the city, and we are excited to be involved in research and development with businesses, while also offering a really valuable service for our local community and visitors to the city.”
David Mintah, AWTG’s Director of Service Delivery and Innovation, said: “AWTG is delighted to design, deploy and integrate Dundee’s Wi-Fi and private 5G network.
“It is enabling features, applications, and services that will provide Dundee’s residents, academics, businesses and visitors with access to the latest digital technologies.
“It is very rewarding to collaborate with Dundee City Council and Abertay University on their digital connectivity initiatives that will contribute to the realisation of associated social and economic benefits in Dundee.”
