Former Dundee Council worker ordered pay back money he stole

Prosecutors have been given the power to recoup thousands of pounds from an IT expert who defrauded a local authority of more than ÂŁ1 million.

Mark Conway was jailed for five years and four months in August after he fraudulently took ÂŁ1,065,085 from Dundee City Council between August 2009 and May last year.

The 52-year-old, who was employed by the council, created false invoices to pay money into his bank accounts and used the funds to pay off gambling debts.

The Crown Office said a confiscation order was granted against Conway at the High Court in Edinburgh earlier.

The order gives the Crown the power to compel Conway to sell his house, with money from the sale - expected to be about ÂŁ50,000 - to be paid to the council as compensation.

It also allows officials to seize more than ÂŁ800,000 of any money and assets that Conway might acquire in the future.

Liam Murphy, procurator fiscal for specialist casework, said: Mark Conway took a significant amount of public funds from a local council while he worked there in a position of trust.

We will continue to pursue Conway to make sure as much of that public money can be recovered.'
