14.year-old charged with Dunfermline High school blaze
Nobody has been injured, but Fife Council's confirmed Woodmill High School will be closed for the rest of the week.
A 14-year old boy has been charged in connection with a massive blaze which ripped through Woodmill High School in Dunfermline overnight.
He’s due in court tomorrow.
Police confirmed the news as firefighters continue to dampen down at the scene.
Emergency crews have been there since yesterday evening.
The secondary's additional support department and dining hall suffered the worst damage
Scottish Fire and Rescue were called to Woodmill High School at 5.05pm on Sunday 25th, August.
A total of 15 appliances were called out to tackle what was described as a “very large and complex” blaze which has contained to the Department of Additional Support and the dining hall – nobody has been injured.
SFRS Area Manager Roddie Keith said:
"It was a very arduous and technically demanding fire to tackle but the key focus was to prevent additional fire spread and contain the fire as much as possible to the part of the building where the fire originated and on the whole we were largely successful in doing that"
People living nearby are being told to close their doors and windows.
Fife Council’s confirmed the school will be closed for the rest of the week while they work out contingency plans for the more than 1400 schoolchildren who attend Woodmill.
Executive Director of Education and Children's Services Carrie Lindsay said:
"There are 1400 children and young people that attend Woodmill currently.
"We also have 70 young people in the department of additional support needs.
"Part of the challenge for us is trying to keep groups of young people together, we don't want to split them up into small groups.
"If we have to do that we want to look at ways that we can educate in the appropriate age groups."
Shelagh McLean, Head of Education & Children’s Services said: “We are all really shocked and upset to hear that there has been a significant fire at Woodmill High School this evening.
“Thankfully no-one is hurt. The fire appears to have been contained to the Department of Additional Support and the dining hall.
“This is still devastating news for staff, pupils and the school community.
“Firefighters were on the scene promptly and we'd like to thank them for their hard work.
“Staff are on site but a decision has been taken to close the school to all pupils until the damage can be fully assessed."
