Fife Pensioner Given 10 Year Driving Ban
William Scott was found guilty of seriously injuring two bikers on Dundee's Riverside Drive
An 80 year old man who mowed down two bikers on a busy city road as he attempted to drive himself to hospital after falling ill was today banned from the road for 10 years. William Scott caused the horrific crash on Dundee's Riverside Drive on June 28 last year. A trial at Dundee Sheriff Court heard Scott first crossed on to the wrong side of the road - which runs alongside the Tay close to Dundee city centre. He then smashed into Scott Brown's motorcycle before failing to stop and pushing Mr Brown and his bike backwards into a second rider, George O'Donnell. Both bikes and riders were then knocked to the ground sustaining serious injuries. Scott continued to drive on before mounting the pavement on the wrong side of the road. Both bikers were hospitalised as a result of the crash but are understood to have made full recoveries. Scott, from Cupar, pleaded not guilty on indictment to a charge of dangerous driving. He maintained his denial of causing the crash throughout his trial at Dundee Sheriff Court. But a jury took less than 20 minutes to find him guilty of causing the smash. Defence advocate David Moggach said it was "beyond dispute" that Scott was attempting to convey himself to Dundee's Ninewells Hospital at the time of the smash. He said: "He was ill and taking himself to the hospital. "I'd suggest his condition at the time did contribute to the incident. "His recollection of it is vague in the extreme." Sheriff Elizabeth Munro fined Scott £1000 and banned him from driving for ten years. She said: "It is relatively unusual to impose a fine in this kind of case but this is an unusual case in all the circumstances."
