A brother who murdered his sister by strangling her with his bare hands because she was 'cheeky' was yesterday jailed for life.

52-year-old Charles Gordon was found guilty of killing his sister Elizabeth Bowe at her flat at Bobby Jones Place in St Andrews on September 17 last year.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that Gordon strangled his sister and then called the police at 9.24pm.

He told a 999 operator: “I think I've killed my sister. She's dead and I'm alive “

Police who arrived at the scene found Gordon calmly smoking a cigarette while standing just feet away from where she lay dying.

He told police officers who battled to save Elizabeth: “She's already dead, you might as well give up.”

Ms. Bowe, who was 50, was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, but sadly died on 20th September.

Gordon, who admitted killing Elizabeth, but not murdering her, was convicted of strangling her with one hand and had the other clamped over her mouth.

He was sentenced to 17 year behind bars before being eligible for release.
