Fife Grave Dug Up

There's shock after a grave was dug up in an apparent act of vandalism in Fife. Human remains were discovered in a pile next to the 200 year plot in Kilrenny on Sunday morning. The grim discovery was made by local Reverend Arthur Christie:

Police say the incident took place sometime between the 1st and 8th of March at the cemetery in Kilrenny. A member of the public found one of the burial sites had been partially dug up and the headstone removed.

The grave belongs to a Stephen Williamson, who was a local shipowner, farmer and magistrate within the East Neuk and who died in 1816.

His wife, Mary Grieve, who died in 1828, is also buried within the plot.

The couple’s grandson Stephen Williamson went on to be a well-known Liberal MP in the region in the 1880s.

Enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding this vandalism are ongoing and anyone who can assist officers with their investigation is asked to come forward.

Inspector Joanne McEwan said: “This has been a grossly disrespectful act of destruction to an ancient grave, which has caused great distress to the local parishioners.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity around the cemetery in the past week or so.

“In addition, anyone with information that can help us identify those responsible is also asked to contact police immediately.”
