Fears self-isolating taxi drivers may break rules to make ends meet
Unite the union's worried cabbies in Dundee who aren't eligible for a £500 grant will be forced to continue taking fares

There are fears taxi drivers in Dundee - contacted by test and protect- could be forced to break self-isolation rules.
Unite the union says cabbies who've come into contact with a covid-positive passenger will struggle to turn down fares - if they're not eligible for the self-isolation grant.
The group has two members currently self-isolating due to links to the virus
"There is a great fear of people doing that breaking self-isolation. It's human nature if you've not gone any income coming, your going to go to work," said Chris Elder, taxi branch secretary.
"We've had drivers that have came to us, members, that have to self-isolate. One at the moment who's self isolating is not available to a grant.
"His family is going to struggle."
The Unite the union taxi branch secretary believes the majority of his members won't be eligible for a £500 isolation payment, which supports people on low incomes.
Cabbie Tam Smith is currently bound to his home after one his passengers tested positive for coronavirus.
"I got a phone call from NHS 24 track and trace. They explained what had to happen, I've got to stay in the house until the 16th November," he said.
"Some of the jobs that you're getting, is vulnerable. There should be more put in place for you, I think we should get some support."
It's as drivers across Scotland are calling on ministers to introduce similar support packages to other parts of the British Isles.
Last month Northern Ireland created a £19m scheme for taxi drivers and private coach and bus operators.
This allowed eligible drivers to apply for a one off £1500 payment.
A similar scheme was set up in the Republic of Ireland to help sole traders in the summer, where drivers could apply for a single payment of 1000 euros.
We've contacted the Scottish Government for comment.
