Dundee woman to go abroad for surgery in bid to cure lipoedema
Isobel Harris was twice denied treatment on the NHS as her conditions were deemed not severe enough
A Dundee woman with lipoedema says she's reached breaking point as she looks to go abroad to get surgery after twice being turned away by doctors here.
Isobel Harris was diagnosed with the debilitating condition four years ago.
It's an abnormal build of fat - usually in the legs - which affects mobility.
It can only be treated through liposuction which is available on the NHS in Scotland but not all get it.
The 64-year-old said it's now or never.
"I want to live my life just now. It could only be 5, 10 years I do have in life, who knows," she said.
"But I do want to live that with my mobility, without it getting worse, I want it to get better.
"I want to be able to do things that before I've been able to."
Isobel's started a fundraiser in a bid to get private surgery in Eastern Europe - where it would cost around £10,000 compared to over £40,000 here.
She admits going overseas to go under the knife is scary.
"The thought of it is daunting, to go and get the surgery.
"Getting the surgery anywhere is a big thing to undertake but it means so much to me to have a good quality of life."
Isobel's currently raised over £2,000 towards her target.
