Former Hearts manager Robbie Neilson is an early frontrunner to become Dundee Utd's next manager, following Csaba Laszlo's sacking yesterday.

The Hungarian lasted less than a year in the job before being shown the door after a 5-1 home defeat by Ross County on Saturday. The result left Utd 5 points off the pace in the Championship title race.

In the meantime, Assistant Laurie Ellis has been put in interim charge of the team.

Chairman Mike Martin said: “I would like to thank Csaba for the considerable commitment he showed during his time at Dundee United and for his contribution to improving the underpinning football structure at the club.

“We wish him all the best for the future."

The Dundee Utd Supporters Foundation issued a statement :

“Whilst it’s never good to see someone lose their Job, DUSF recognise this needed to be done. Furthermore, we publicly stated in May that the manager's position needed to be properly reviewed after last season's failures. Alongside most fans we were very disappointed that this did not happen.

The Dundee United board now need to act quickly to properly select and recruit a manager who will command the respect of the players and fans. The Board must install a sense of togetherness at the club. The support of the fans has been fantastic over the turbulent past couple of years, however that should not be taken for granted.

There are still questions that fans deserve to have answered, not least what is the position on future investment that has been mooted now for almost two years. United fans are renowned for their loyalty and we are crying out for some real leadership and direction from our board of directors.”
