Dundee University to get access to £15m in funding
The announcement was made by the finance secretary shortly before the government's budget was approved
The University of Dundee is being given access to £15m in support from the Scottish Government.
The money will be made available to the Scottish Funding Council to support institutions across the country.
Dundee University has come under particular strain, with the resignation of senior staff, strikes and a £30m projected shortfall.
Making the announcement before the government's £63bn budget was passed earlier this evening, finance secretary Shona Robison said: “Up to £15m of financial transactions will be made available to the Scottish Funding Council to support the sector and universities, such as the University of Dundee.
“Further, work will be ongoing in the coming weeks on this matter and the minister for higher education will keep parliament updated.”
In November, an email was sent by the then principal, Professor Iain Gillespie, warning staff job losses were “inevitable” and that it was facing a potential £30m deficit.
Mr Gillespie has since resigned, along with other senior members of the institution’s management team.
Members of the University and College Union also began strike action yesterday.
And more staff at the university could soon join them on the picket line as Unison members, including IT, admin, cleaning, security and facilities workers, are being balloted on strike action.
A spokesperson for the University of Dundee said: “We are continuing to work on the financial recovery plan to address the serious challenges facing the University and will have further updates on that work soon.”
