Dundee United have released club captain Sean Dillon after more than a decade at Tannadice.

The defender played almost 350 times for United after arriving in January 2007 from Shelbourne and featured in their 2010 Scottish Cup final triumph.

The 33-year-old had a testimonial earlier this year and his final game proved to be United's defeat by Hamilton in the Premiership play-off final.

The Irishman told the club's YouTube channel: "You know it's going to happen at some stage but it's hard to get your head around when it actually comes to an end, so I'm pretty sad.

"You always know you can't play at such a great club forever but I was obviously hoping that it would last a bit longer.

"The time I have had here has been brilliant. It's been a great experience for me and my family. I am full of great memories, obviously some bad ones as well in more recent times.''
