Dundee's Disaster Relief Fund has been re-opened to help refugees in Syria.

Lord Provost Bob Duncan is hoping locals will dig-deep to help humanitatian efforts to ease the crises across Europe.

He said: “The shocking pictures we have all seen of refugees and victims of the war in Syria has touched people’s hearts across the world and in Dundee folk have been in touch to express their shock and frustration at the loss of life and suffering.

“I was moved to reopen the fund as a way of allowing Dundonians to make a practical contribution to the humanitarian aid that is now so badly needed.

"The fund exists to promote welfare and relieve suffering, distress and poverty of those who need it internationally or in the United Kingdom. “Our city has proved in the past that it will respond generously when events like this happen and I am sure many will want to do what they can for the people of Syria.”

Donations can be made by public and staff via the Dundee City Council website or via sealed charity buckets at council offices across the city from Tuesday 29th September. Bucket locations include Dundee House, the West Housing Office in Sinclair Street, East Housing Office in Pitkerro Road and 18 City Square.

Dundee City Council employees are also being given the option to donate through the “give as you earn” scheme, where a donation will be deducted from their wages from October.

The fund, which is a registered company with charitable status, was last used to help victims of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
