It happened at the junction of Kingway West and Coupar Angus Road at 7.20pm on Saturday, August 13.
An object was thrown at a white Volkswagon Polo, leaving the rear side passenger door dented.
A police spokeswoman said: “On this occasion no-one was injured, but the driver was alarmed by the incident.
“Throwing any item at a moving vehicle is dangerous and can have very serious implications for all road users.
“Anyone who has information that could assist officers with their enquiries into the matter should contact Police Scotland on 101.”
