Sean Dillon admits dismal Dundee United have to sort out the basics as soon as possible.

The struggling Tannadice side remain five points behind Partick at the bottom of the Ladbrokes Premiership following a 5-0 thrashing by Celtic at Parkhead on Sunday.

In various post-match interviews United's new boss Mixu Paatelainen, in charge for his second game following the 1-0 home defeat to Hearts last week, lambasted

his players, describing their performance in a painful experience'' for him asrubbish''.

The 32-year-old Dubliner took his gaffer's stinging criticism on the chin,

saying: I can't argue against him, he is right.''

And he conceded that the United players have to make amends quickly.

It has to change soon,'' said defender Dillon. The gaffer obviously feels he has to work on a lot of stuff and again, you can't argue with that.

We know that we need results and you don't want to be looking at other team's results.

The immediate future is a case of working really hard on a lot of different things, mainly basics, and trying to put that right.

I do believe if we can do that we will be alright but it is going to be hard.''

Dillon admits that even an understandable lack of confidence could not excuse the goals United conceded in a wretched afternoon which, in truth, could have been more embarrassing for the visitors.

I think confidence is an issue,'' he said.

I wouldn't dismiss that altogether because we have one win in the league this season.

It is not a great time and I can understand confidence being low.

But we need to keep working and regardless of whether your confidence is high or not, if you are making basic mistakes and giving goals away like we did on Sunday, even confidence doesn't come into it.

We had a certain plan going into the game but the goals we conceded were

basic goals.

After working on a lot of stuff since the manager has come in, it was very disappointing and frustrating.

We have to believe. We have a lot of good guys in the team, a lot of talent.

But the basic stuff has to be put right and it is something that the gaffer has been pushing on us since he came in.

It has only been a week and a half but he is very determined to put it right.''
