Cycling Forum launches in Dundee

A new forum, which will give a voice to cyclists of all abilities across Dundee, launches later.

Two-wheeled enthusiasts will gather at the Dalhouse Building, University of Dundee on Monday, October 24, to establish a Cycling Forum for Dundee.

The Cycling Forum is designed to become an independent local voice for cyclists to help inform future decision making on infrastructure investment and engagement.

Will Dawson convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee said: “It is an exciting time for cycling in Dundee, with more people using their bikes, new investment in off road and on road infrastructure and new initiatives to help more people get on their bikes.

“We’ve also got cycle training for Dundee school pupils and the council recently adopted the Dundee Cycling Strategy.

“The city already has some of the best cycling infrastructure of any Scottish city, with 25 miles of Green Circular and Greenways routes forming other links. We have BMX parks and mountain bike trails, as well as the velodrome at Caird Park, which is the longest in Scotland and the only one outside Glasgow and Edinburgh.

“Links to other areas through the National Cycle Network offer routes to Fife, Arbroath and the Carse of Gowrie on well established quiet roads or shared use paths.”

Previous consultation has already identified additional routes that people would like to ride, and where improvements for cyclists are thought to be required.

It is based on a similar successful model operating in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, and will help cyclists communicate with Dundee City Council and other agencies on issues of mutual interest.

Members of the forum will be able to comment on future plans and share experiences in an environment that could become the main force to develop events and activities for everyone to enjoy cycling.

The forum meeting will be held in the Dalhouse Building at Dundee University on October 24 between 7 and 9pm.
