Dundee manager Paul Hartley will work on his side's attacking play after they suffered an early Betfred Cup setback against East Fife.

With Greg Stewart missing with a thigh knock, Dundee failed to build on Kane Hemmings' 35th-minute opener and were pegged back by Kevin Smith's late free-kick.

The Fifers went on to earn a bonus point in the penalty shoot-out and Hartley will seek improvement when Dumbarton visit Dens Park on Saturday.

"We didn't really threaten East Fife's goal in the second half and will look at that for next week," Hartley said.

"We'll have players back and I want to give them game time.

"It was the first game of the season and we want to try and improve - we have to improve and know that. We'll get better.

"Greg Stewart will be back training with us at the start of the week."
