Nearly 2,000 COVID-19 cases in Scotland are being linked to fans watching EURO 2020 football matches.

Figures from Public Health Scotland reveal there have been 1,991 and nearly two thirds of them reported travelling to London to watch Scotland play England on June 18th.

A total of 397 of these were fans at the game at Wembley Stadium.

The Public Health Scotland report said a “relatively small number'' of cases in Scotland were linked to the Euro 2020 fanzone at Glasgow Green at 55, while 38 and 37 respectively were linked to Scotland v Croatia and Scotland v the Czech Republic at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

The report states: “PHS is working with Test & Protect and NHS boards to ensure that all public health actions are taken in the close contacts of these Euro 2020 cases as part of the 32,539 cases that were reported to the Test & Protect Case Management System during this period June 11-28.''

Number of deaths

It comes as new data published by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) today shows 17 fatalities were registered where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate between June 21st and 27th.

The latest weekly data comes after Scotland recorded its highest number of cases in one day since the pandemic began, with 3,285 positive tests on Monday - which was followed by 3,118 on Tuesday.

Pete Whitehouse, NRS director of statistical services, said: “The number of deaths has risen slightly in recent weeks but is still very low relative to the number of Covid-19 cases.''
