SEPA warns against bathing or paddling in Carnoustie after pollution incident
The incident occurred at Pitairlie Burn on Wednesday, 31st May 2023
People are being warned against bathing and paddling in bathing waters in Carnoustie following a pollution incident.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) were informed of an incident affecting the Pitairlie Burn at Carnoustie yesterday (31st May 2023).
Due to the potential impact to water quality at Carnoustie, and the official bathing water season beginning today (1st June 2023), signs are being posted to advise against bathing.
SEPA are liaising closely with Angus Council and NHS Tayside and we will continue to work together to monitor the situation.
A spokesperson for SEPA said: “SEPA are aware of a pollution incident that has the potential to impact water quality at Carnoustie bathing water.
“Our officers have attended and investigated the incident and if required we will explore any further mitigation measures. Water samples have been taken from the burn to assess impact from this event, and samples from the bathing water will also be taken by SEPA.
“Angus Council is placing signs at the bathing water to notify users of the pollution incident and to avoid bathing and paddling.
“Advice against bathing will remain in place until SEPA are satisfied this incident is not impacting water quality at Carnoustie.”
