Camperdown Wildlife Centre bear, Comet, dies
The European brown bear had a short illness
A male bear at Dundee’s Camperdown Wildlife Centre has died at the age of 30.
Comet was diagnosed with a tumour in his abdomen last week and his condition deteriorated over the weekend.
The European Brown bear moved to the city from Edinburgh Zoo when he was 16 months old and was later joined by Star from the Highland Wildflie Park.
Aileen Whitelaw, Wildlife Centre manager, said: "Comet has been an important ambassador for Camperdown Wildlife Centre for almost 30 years and will be sorely missed."
European brown bears are close relatives of the American grizzly bear and are of similar size, with an average life expectancy of 25 in the wild.
The mammals are mostly found in Spain, Italy and Romania.
