An elderly Dundee woman with dementia's been left stranded and confused in Bulgaria after falling and breaking her femur.

73-year-old Annie Stupart has a range of other health problems and her family's been told she can only be taken back to Dundee by air ambulance.

But her insurance company will not cover the cost so now they are crowdfunding to bring her home.

Her granddaughter Leighanne says it has had a massive impact on the whole family.

Leighanne told the GoFundMe page: “While on holiday in Bulgaria it was raining and my gran’s walking stick slipped on the wet walk path due to this she lost her balance and fell and badly fractured her femur bone which is the longest and strongest bone in the human body.

“She has now been in 3 different hospitals but we need her home ASAP the only way we can get her home is in an air ambulance from Bourgas straight to Ninewells.

“She has a lot of health problems including a very weak heart so the chance of her surviving an operation to insert a hip implant which will take about 6 hours to perform is below 30% and like most people in our situation we are not willing to take that risk. The hospital she's in at the moment won't perform any kind of operation on her because she's too much of a high risk.

“The insurance company she is with have basically left us in the dark on what's going to be happening with her and getting her home. The hospital have said the longer we leave it the worse she can get. She is very confused also due to having vascular dementia so we just need her home to be with her family and get care back in Scotland.”
