Anniversary celebrations planned for Tay Road Bridge

Locals help needed to showcase 50th Anniversary of Tay Road Bridge

Do you have a special memory of The Tay Road Bridge?

If you do bosses are asking for help to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Designed by William A Fairhurst, the bridge opened in 1966 to replace the ferries that took passengers across the Firth of Tay.

Organisers are now planning a series of events to mark 50 years.

They are looking for memorabilia and memories to help put together an exhibition.

Organisers are hoping it will be showcased in Dundee and Fife.

Councillor Maggie Taylor said: “We’re looking for people to share their stories. Perhaps what life was like before the bridge and how it changed after it opened. We take the bridge for granted today, but it has had a massive impact on the local area. We want to hear from people who found the new crossing to be life changing. We also would like to see artifacts from the time, such as publications and souvenir gifts that were handed out to mark its opening. The Tay Road Bridge is a fantastic structure and we need everyone’s help in making its 50th celebrations memorable.”

Organisers are also launching a ‘Sponsor a Column’ campaign. Local street artists will be employed to paint the bridge columns underneath the Dundee ramp. The artists are preparing new designs for the columns that will give a new life to a much forgotten space under the Bridge.
