Angus Park Set for Dragon Invastion

DragonQuest will transform Monikie Country Park into a land of dragons, fairies and trolls

Monikie Country Park is to be transformed in a mythical land this October as the woods are brought to life.

Augmented reality adventure DragonQuest, which will see a 20 metre dragon move into the park, gives adventure hunters the chance to hunt for magical creatures using their smartphones and tablets.

Edinburgh theatre company, Vision Mechanics, is creating an original story-telling event, which will see the woods lit up and inhabited by dragons, trolls, fairies and goblins.

Artistic Director, Symon Macintyre said:

"DragonQuest is not just about being tech-savvy. It's a great story of romance, magic and mystery that you, as an audience, discover as you walk in the woods on an autumn evening. With or without a smartphone, DragonQuest is an event for the whole family.

"Audiences will be amazed and intrigued by the impressive, interactive physical installations on offer and, through the downloadable App, can also enjoy a wider, high-tech experience. By capturing images, they will trigger animations on their smartphones or tablets, seeing fairies, hovering flies and goblins as they walk through the woods on their search for an ancient dragon that has supposedly come to rest there. But, technology aside, there will also be lots of more traditional, theatrical creations to see and explore on the night!"

DragonQuest has been supported by Creative Scotland, EventScotland, part of the VisitScotland Events Directorate, and Angus Council.

Councillor Jeanette Gaul, Angus Council’s Vice-Convener of Communities added, "Monikie Country Park offers a fabulous setting for visitors to experience this magical performance. We’re looking forward to welcoming local visitors - and further afield. I understand that there’s been a lot of buzz and excitement from visitors calling and stopping in to the park to ask when tickets are going on sale. Now’s your chance - this interactive showcase is going to prove popular for all the family, so don’t delay, get your ticket today!"

Jim Clarkson, VisitScotland Regional Partnerships Director said, "Every year, Angus welcomes visitors from all across the globe but I’m certain this is the first time we’ve played host to so many different mythical creatures! DragonQuest is shaping up to be one of the most exciting and eagerly anticipated events of the year, boasting enthralling stories and state-of-the-art technology. I’m sure it will attract visitors from both the local area and beyond and make for an unforgettable visit to beautiful Monikie Country Park this Autumn."
