Angela Crawley MP to step down at next General Election
The SNP representative for Lanarkshire and Hamilton East says it has been an honour to serve her constituency
An SNP MP has announced she will not be running again at the next General Election.
The representative for Lanark and Hamilton East announced her resignation on Twitter earlier today, in a letter addressed to residents, friends and supporters in the area.
In the statement, she laid out her reasons for stepping back, saying: “Serving my community has always been my number one priority.
“This has, however, come at a personal cost and required many difficult compromises.
“The unpredictability of Westminster can be a challenge with a young family.”
Ms Crawley will step down at the next general election
Ms Crawley has been the member for the constituency since 2015, and during her time in office has prioritised campaigning for LGBTQ+ equality in parliament.
She also advocated for victims of domestic abuse to be made exempt from the child maintenance charge, as well as launching the campaign for paid miscarriage leave in the UK.
In her statement, she continued: “Having been an SNP member since my student days – and after more than 15 years as an elected politician – I recognise not just the huge potential of our part of the world, but the work needed to bring it to fruition.”
“I will continue to campaign tirelessly for independence and a brighter, better future for my family, my community, and the people of Scotland.”
