A flagship 24 hour mental health centre in Perth is now open.

The facility provides respite through one to one support and overnight accommodation.

It’ll work alongside NHS services and police with the aim of stopping those in need falling through the cracks.

Wendy Given is helping run The Neuk, she says it’s the first-of-its-kind in the region.

"Certainly in Tayside, there is nothing else 24/7. David Strang carried out the independent inquiry into mental health services in Tayside and as part of his findings a model like this was recommended," she said.

"Out of hours is predominantly where the support is needed. During the day you have GPs that are there and other support agencies.

"I think people tend to cope much better during the day, it always seems to be the evenings and the weekends where there is a higher rate of people accessing support."

The centre is run by a number of third sector groups, including Anchor House and The Lighthouse for Perth.

It's been operating a 9-5 service since opening last year, and has now been given the necessary funding to open round-the-clock.
