It seems 2023 was the year for TV reboots! Not only did ITV bring back Big Brother, BBC bosses revived 90s gameshow Gladiators, and popular quiz show Deal or No Deal made an emphatic comeback with a new host.

As the show has now been renewed for a second series, here's everything we know so far about Deal or No Deal's return, as it begins on Monday 28th October.

Deal or No Deal celebrity special:

The first celebrity special of Deal or No Deal aired on Sunday 7th January 2024, where Coronation Street actor Simon Gregson took part for charity. Simon won £15,300 for his chosen charity.

Bosses have now confirmed another celebrity special will air this Autumn, with Hits Radio presenter Sam Thompson rumoured to be the one taking part in the I'm A Celeb special.

Is Deal or No Deal back on TV?

The hit show, which aired on Channel 4 between 2005 and 2016, was rebooted by ITV, with bosses securing Catchphrase and In For A Penny host Stephen Mulhern as a permanent host.

Rumours of a rebooted show first started back in January 2023 when The Mirror, revealed following two successful pilot shows, ITV had ordered 20 episodes for the rebooted series with Stephen, which will run across a month in daytime.

An insider told the publication: "Deal or No Deal is such a strong format you don’t want to go fiddling with it. It’s pretty much the same. The boxes are back, the banker is back and the 22 players.

"The only difference is Stephen, which gives it a fresh feel.”

When is Deal or No Deal back on TV?

The rebooted series started on Monday 20th November 2023. Series one was made up on 20 episodes, running until Friday 15th December.

Series two started on Monday 28th October, airing every weeknight at 4pm.

Will there be a second series?

In January 2024, ITV/STV bosses announced Deal or No Deal had been commissioned for a second series.

Host Stephen Mulhern said of the news: “I am absolutely over the moon that Deal or No Deal is returning to our screens. The response has been incredible and series one was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions. I loved it! The contestants were a fantastic bunch facing the banker and our new batch of players need to hold their nerve if they want to walk away with the huge jackpot! It's such a phenomenal show and I’m absolutely chuffed to bits that we’re going to be doing it all over again. I can't wait to get back to that studio!”

Tamara Gilder, Joint Managing Director for Remarkable Entertainment, said: “We were absolutely blown away by how much love there was for the show. We can’t wait to make some more with the wonderful Stephen. Less so that Banker guy.”

Katie Rawcliffe, Head of Entertainment commissioning at ITV added: “We are delighted the ITV viewers loved the new series Deal or No Deal, it was a triumphant return for this thoroughly enjoyable game show. It's a fantastic format that is both heartwarming and captivating and with Stephen at the helm it's the perfect combination.”

What channel is Deal or No Deal on?

Who hosts Deal or No Deal?

It was announced in early 2023 that Stephen Mulhern would host the show, after he recorded two pilot episodes in December 2022.

Speaking about the rebooted show, Stephen said: "Wow what an opportunity, I’m beyond excited to be hosting the brand-new series. I’ve always been such a huge fan of the show, so much so, I’ve been practising at home with small cereal boxes!

"It looks so simple but it's an incredibly compelling game for both those playing and the viewers watching at home. It’s one of the greatest shows of all time and to be the new host is an honour! I can’t wait to get started."

Katie Rawcliffe, Head of Entertainment commissioning at ITV added: "Deal or No Deal is such an iconic format and we are delighted that it will be joining the ITV family. Stephen's infectious warmth and wit mixed with his natural rapport with members of the public is the perfect combination for this much-loved TV series."

Deal or No Deal Christmas special:

Former football Michael Owen took part in the 2023 Christmas special of Deal or No Deal, which aired on Sunday 17th December at 7pm.

Michael won £4,000 for charity.

How are the boxes allocated?

The contestants are allocated their boxes at random. In a video shared to Stephen Mulhern's Instagram page, he reveals that the contestants are asked to choose a ball out of a bag. All of the balls have a number on them, which correlate to a box, so you would be given the box with the number that you have chosen at random.

When was Deal or No Deal last on TV?

Originally hosted by Noel Edmonds between October 2005 and December 2015, Deal or No Deal saw a chosen contestant being asked to pick one box out of 22, all of which contained cash prizes ranging from 1p and a massive £250,000.

As the game went on, contestants were forced to decide if they wanted to stick with the unknown figure in their own box, or take a cash offer from 'the banker', which could equate to more or less than the figure in their box.
