For one night only on Tuesday 7th March 2017, MOJO and Cinevents will celebrate the life of David Bowie with a unique screening of the concert film Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars at cinemas across the UK.
The work of esteemed filmmaker D. A. Pennebaker (Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard), the fabled documentary was filmed at London’s Hammersmith Odeon on July 3rd 1973 on what was ultimately the final outing of Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust persona.
Together with the digitally and audio remastered film, the evening will also boast a screening of an exclusive new 30-minute documentary produced by MOJO magazine featuring Editor-In-Chief extraordinaire Phil Alexander in conversation with the last surviving member of The Spiders From Mars, Woody Woodmansey.
Woody, who released his critically-acclaimed book ‘Spider from Mars: My Life with Bowie’ last November, reflects upon the culturally momentous night at Hammersmith Apollo 43 years ago and talks candidly about “the adventure of a lifetime” as one-quarter of the band.
As if this wasn’t enough, each ticket holder will receive an exclusive copy of MOJO magazine featuring a Ziggy Stardust cover that’s not available to buy in the shops.
Woody Woodmansey commented: “Every so often an artist comes along and has that ability to really communicate – because that’s what art is – and it’s on such a high level. There’s good music, there’s better music, great music, and then you’ve got somebody who can deliver constantly. He was a cut above.
“I always thought that any time David Bowie wanted to write a hit song he could sit down and in 20 minutes he would have written one. He always had that about him. The fact that he didn’t do that was his choice He came out at a point when the business and the world really needed brightening up. It needed a lift.
“He managed to do that, he managed to lift it, and then his influence went into all into the other arts and genres of music, and brightened all of their areas up. That’s one individual who managed to do that.”
Phil Alexander adds: “MOJO is proud to be celebrating the life and music of David Bowie through what should be a unique evening across the UK. Filming with Woody was a real joy, and the film we’ve made really delivers a new slant on the Ziggy movie itself. The creation of a bespoke cover of MOJO for those attending these screenings is also a way in which we think we can genuinely make those who attend the event feel like they are receiving something genuinely special to celebrate Bowie. We hope that this evening will mark a start of a set of events special events curated by MOJO. Watch this space.”
